Jump the gun with Mr.Gold – or Alan Sugar wannabe – and wet your appetite. Go on. It’s silly season. Well, there isn’t anything silly about that in all male honesty. Fleet Streets summer doors have opened to your annual dosage, and this week in the intense British climate, the vultures are flying around a carnage of a nearly there season.
Jens Lehmann was inevitably to go. Matheui Flamini’s exit was slightly bemusing to all, and its subtext suggests a glut of greed from the Frenchman and a naive approach from the Arsenal boardroom. The hole left by David Dein, and now Keith Edelman, is increasing the burden on Arsene. Danny Fiszman and loyal servant Ken Friar have temporarily taken up the reins, but a shift in the gods will be needed if players are not to leave like its Derby County F.C.
Many Gooners are worried about the tight wage s tructure which is at odds with the real dystopia of endless riches of Europe’s other giants. The boss had a thing or two to ease some thoughts of the average Gooner…
“I personally have fought all my life for players to earn good money because I think they deserve it,” said Wenger.
“But I believe at every club you have to respect what you can spend and you shouldn’t promise what you cannot afford. We want every player to earn good money but you have to respect the wage structure of the club and the financial potential of the club.”
It is to this instant gratification that the mongrels of Milan now hen-peck for Alex Hleb. The Belarusian has been in fine form this season, however his dip in the middle third suggests he isn’t the be all and end all many claim he is. In terms of goal tally ratio, it isn’t a picturesque sight – 11 goals in 3 years suggests to me a limited influence in goalscoring, but his articulate play does move the Arsenal engine. As a Wenger type winger, he is completely different to Marc Overmars and Robert Pires in offering double figures every season. Perhaps selling him would be a blessing in disguise for much needed goals from midfield. Enter Nico Krankjar.
However, having said all that, Arsenal cannot be a selling club. Hleb must stay for his own good; playing in a defensive league will limit his ability. Were else in the world can he play his intricate through balls for fun?
It’s been suggested that Hleb will use the Webster clause and but out his contract, however Le Boss thinks otherwise;
“That is not as simple as it looks,” retorted Wenger. “And you should not forget that what players can do to us we can do to them.
“The Webster clause is not easy, you can’t come in next day and buy out. There is no rule that says what it is all about. You have to go to a tribunal and then to FIFA and if you don’t agree with FIFA [you] have to go to ACAS. It takes a lot of months. And you can be banned for the whole period if it is not done in a proper way.”
And so, onto Mr.Adebayor. The man influenced by Arsenal’s greatest ever goalscorer to score 30 goals this season. Achieved, but still more to improve on. And yet, the disgusting perpetuaty so farfetched of any rubbish tabloid that can’t get a decent headline grind out the whip on our top goalscorer. Frankly, the leggy one has doused that stinking fire;
‘I am very happy here. Reports which suggest I have threatened to quit are rubbish. I love the club and the fans.’
Blimey, this whole article dedicated to waving out the flies. After all this hulabazoo, other rumours consists of more juicy legs upstairs. Longtime Gooner-girl Karren Brady is being lined up as a future Managing Director according to the intellectuals of The Times. I for one, without the need for a Freudian analysis, will be quite relevaed with some glamour in the Arsenal line-up. I’ll leave the last word on the boss – don’t worry, we will have a team to compete for the championship next year.
“What is a big club? Is it only down to trophies? This club here has a history of being built by people of values.
“They may say this manager didn’t win enough trophies, but the club has kept its reputation within the values for the whole history. That is vital.
“I have a responsibility, it is not what I like, it is not what the players like, it is what is good for the club. That’s the only decision I will make.”
Thanks Arsene, the world isn’t so silly after all.
